- The Master Lock No. 3
I am asked quite frequently what lock one should begin their lock picking journey with and I often refer them to a Master Lock No. 3.
While these locks can be short lived in the amount of time it takes to master them (no pun intended😜) they are easily one of the most versatile locks for the beginner.
They can quite literally be opened using any method of bypass including raking, single pin picking, bitch picking, zipping, rocking, shimming, using light tension, or heavy tension... it doesn’t matter because you can easily find success with any method available and it will set an important foundation for each method to be built upon!
For those who are starting out here is a little tip for single pin picking non security pin Master Locks (or any cheap lock for that matter.) Just use heavy tension.
Most guides will tell you to use “light tension,” however because cheaper lock have so much “slop” in their components, you can simply just bind all the pins and force each one to the shear line without too much fear of over-setting one.
So to pick your Master Lock, apply heavy tension (about as much pressure as it takes for your tension wrench to leave an indent on your finger.) Starting from the front and moving back, push each pin to the shear line until you hear or feel it set. You will he surprised at how fast you can run through a cheap lock this way!
Best of luck and Happy Picking!🗝

I'm a light tension /tickler myself usually, but I'm going to try heavy tension with a false set on some Chinesiums.
