Heroic Stories of D-Day: An Iconic War Hero “James Doohan”
James Doohan is best know as “Scotty” from the TV series and movies of Star Trek. Doohan was the actor that played the engineer aboard the starship USS Enterprise; which today the modern Scotty is played by actor Simon Pegg. What many do not know is that before James Doohan was known as the famous Scotty, he was known as Lieutenant James Doohan of the Canadian Army, storming Juno Beach on D-Day.
James Doohan was born on March 3rd 1920 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In 1938 he became part of the 102nd Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. Once World War ll broke out, Doohan became part of the Royal Canadian Artillery, the 14th Field Battery of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. By the time he was commissioned as a Lieutenant and was heading to England, he was part of the 14th Field Artillery Regiment of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. He arrived in England in 1940 and trained there until D-Day, June 6th 1944. On D-Day, Doohan stormed Juno Beach being defended by the German 716th Infantry Division; despite the defenses being bombed by bombers and attacked by destroyers, 340 Canadians were killed and almost 600 wounded on Juno Beach. During the beach assault, Doohan is accredited with killing two German snipers on the higher ground above him in the first hours of the assault. Doohan and his men also went through a minefield on the beach meant to destroy any enemy tanks. The men were not heavy enough to set off the mines but nonetheless went through the minefield. By noon Doohan and his men secured their objectives. About 12 hours later, that night, Doohan was out smoking and walking between command posts. During his walk a edgy and jumpy Canadian sentry manning a Bren gun, fired on Doohan thinking he was the enemy. Doohan was struck six times, four in the leg, one in his right middle finger causing his finger to be amputated, and one in chest which was stopped by the silver cigarette case which was a gift from his brother. Doohan was badly wounded but the cigarette case saved his life by stopping the bullet. CONTINUED IN COMMENTS. 👇👇👇👇👇
