hiking mission: failed 😥
The incline killed me 😣 Barely into 10 minutes of the hike, I was panting and wheezing #suchaloser
and I veered off the trail to go onto the main road for cars because it was easier for me to walk while the other troopers trudged ahead through the steep forest path all the way to the top. Even though I didn't get to the top, I did get high enough to get a view of #chuzenjilake
and be shrouded in mist of clouds. .
I realize my regular runs helped me with endurance but not with pace and certainly not to cope with the variety in terrain. That messed up my breathing pattern which my body has grown accustomed to while running at a regular pace on a flat ground versus hiking on a slippery path with ups and downs on varying inclines. As such I feel I should invest in hiking as another form of exercise to jolt my body out of it's rigid running mode. Plus I live in this part of Japan that is landlocked by mountains, there are a dime a dozen hiking trails to choose from. So really no excuse for me. After 3 years of living in this prefecture, can you believe that today's hike was my first ever here. I've climbed Mt. Fuji, Mt. Takao, and few other trails in other parts of Japan but never in this prefecture where I live #suchashame
is such a pleasant experience. First of all, they're accessible to get to via public transport - train, bus, etc. The trails are well-marked and everyone is respectful of the environment. Very rarely do I see litter, vandalism, etc. To be surrounded by well-preserved nature is 😍. My fave part is how fellow hikers will greet each other when they cross paths and even cheer you on - indeed a reflection of Japan's common courtesy. Also there are always toilet facilities and they're usually clean. Some places even have an onsen at the base of the mountain, a perfect way to treat yourself after. At this mountain, there was a running hose and scrub brushes available for hikers to clean off the access soil from our shoes. It's these little things that make me enjoy the whole experience despite not making it to the top. Ok no more space to type. The end.
