How to play at being ladylike while having lunch at #sanlorenzo in 1972. A skirt suit is essential, preferably in a jaunty print. Ankle strap sandals add stature, as does a slouchy hat. And big sunglasses and a giant red clutch bag show you mean business. #jameswedge #harpersandqueen #jornlangberg for #diorlondon #charlesjourdan #loewe #dresshistory #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #vintagefashion #1970sfashion
I've been trying for over a year to get my hands on this catalog from a 1900 exhibition of artistic dress in Germany! It's packed with illustrations, photos I've never seen, and even some sewing-patternesque depictions of appliqués and embellishments. The introduction was written by Maria Sèthe, who was married to Henry van de Velde, the art nouveau architect. He generally gets full credit for designing and making the clothing Maria wore at home, but the couple's letters to each other hint that she had an active role in the process. I'm working on identifying her contributions. #fashionhistory #antifashion #artnouveau

The House of Worth was established in the mid- nineteenth century and very soon became the pinnacle of French luxury fashion. Whilst Worth was working at Gagelin, the fashion house supplied the newly married Empress Eugenie with her bridal trousseau. On establishing his own house, Worth was appointed court designer by the Empress. Under her patronage, Worth designed a wealth of dresses for aristocratic ladies of the French court. This gown designed by Worth for Esther Chapin, could be worn to a number of social events due to three interchangeable bodices. The dress could be transformed into a dinner dress, a ball gown and into a court presentation gown complete with exquisite detachable train (pictured). This was an extremely cleaver and economical design innovation that demonstrates Worth’s creativity and fashion design prowess. Probably my favourite gown that I have posted to date! - House of Worth, France, 1888, Met Museum #fashionhistory #dresshistory #historyoffashion #costumehistory #courtdress #houseofworth #19thcentury #19thcenturyfashion #metmuseum #dress

. 🌸 White and pink for summer 🌸 . Vogue June 1946, model Dorian Leigh photographed by John Rawlings, issue in my collection. . 'There's a new light on summer evenings—this neat-headed cloche, this shirtwaist dress take exception to rules and go out at dinner-time. The hat (by Madame Reine) because it is silk satin, pale as a pink pearl, wears a great jewel. When @theoverdressed put through her order for this 1980s Emanuel Ungaro dress, I sent her a note telling her to not even seriously look at it until she actually tried it on and to book her tailor because she would need it fitted to her body exactly. She took my advice on both counts and even my jaw dropped when I saw her in it last night. A lot of modern clothes are cut for hanger appeal, or in other words, made deliberately to look really good hanging on the hanger so that you will fall instantly in love and impulse buy based on the fantasy of your first impression. Mass marketed, cheap clothing especially. Even when that sometimes means it doesn’t actually look good on your body. Vintage is the opposite. It was made to look good on a body. Marketing wasn’t quite as sophisticated and sneaky yet. Design houses made smaller quantities and women bought less. How it looked in the body was the most important thing, not how it looked hanging on the store competing against hundreds of other brands. This dress has zero hanger appeal and even on the mannequin it looked nowhere near as good as it does on Dana but I knew. My little shop is only online so sometimes a dress gets overlooked because all you have to go by is how it looks on the mannequin, despite my best efforts to share how wonderful my vintage finds are. I try to tell you guys in my descriptions ... ‘it’s incredible’ ‘much better in person’ ‘amazing’ ... but we live in a world where everyone is just trying to constantly sell us on shitty stuff so my message doesn’t always make it through. I know there are a few of you that will be weeping into your coffee today because I had suggested this dress to you and you didn’t listen. I mean, just look at Dana in it. Don’t feel too bad though. This one was obviously meant for her and yours will come. I will find it, I promise. And when I tell you it’s way, way better in person, you will know I’m not just trying to make that sale. I actually mean it.
This has long been one of my favorite #FashionPlates . The dress is delicious, of course, but she's also got gorgeous #jewelry ! There are a lot of extant collet necklaces with cross pendants, but they don't show up in artwork very often. It's lovely to see one here, especially with the matching earrings! 🌿 Elsa Schiaparelli’s Pagan Collection: 1938 Nature Magic - a lecture by Dr Sabina Stent, Thurs 28th June at Treadwells 🌿 ... In 1938 the Surrealist fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli launched her ‘Pagan Collection’ which was to go down in history. Influenced by mythology and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, it featured dresses adorned with flowers and necklaces with insects. It radiated “the pagan joy of living” and blended the boundaries between the body and the natural world. In this illustrated lecture, fashion art history scholar Sabina Stent explores Schiaparelli’s famed collection in context of surrealism. The designer, like other Surrealists, believed in making magic through creative endeavor : Schiaparelli wanted here to intertwine body and nature and thus to merge the two into one entity. We can see the collection as a piece of art magic, with this as its goal. 🌸🌸🌸 The fabulous @sabinastent is an independent scholar who researches, writes and lectures on the subject. Her PhD thesis was “Women Surrealists: Sexuality, Fetish, Femininity and Female Surrealism” (Birmingham, 2012). She has previously lectured at Treadwell’s on Leonor Fini: Surrealist Sorceress to a sold-out audience, and to Valentine Penrose: Surreal Occultress. 🌚🌚🌚 £9 - Arrive 7.15 for 7.30 start. The new era of high-resolution, Creative Commons licensed images available on the internet is really revolutionising fashion history research. It's amazing that from my home in New Zealand I can now see the exact weaves of the different fabrics that make up this Poiret dress, and even figure out the precise stitch and length used for all of the exterior finishes. ⠀ .⠀ It certainly revolutionised this dress for me: I'd dismissed this as one of Poiret's less interesting creations, but larger images show that it contains all the details and wit that characterise his work, from the triple-scalloped hem, to the faux button ribbon that 'fastens' the front of the dress. I'm now even more in awe of the seamstresses who managed to work all the details in a twill weave!⠀ .⠀ Dress, Paul Poiret (French, Paris 1879–1944 Paris), 1925, wool, silk, Metropolitan Museum of Art, C.I.50.117⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #poiret #creativecommons #paulpoiret#1920s #1920sfashion #1920sdress #fashionhistory #costumehistory #redandblack #scallops #trompeloeil #historicalfashion #sewing #sewinghistory #vintage #vintagesewing #vintage1920s #vintagestyle #socialhistory #flapper #notaflapper #notall20sgirlswereflappers #sewinglove #metropolitanmmuseumofart #thedreamstress

June 23rd 1929 ~ Ted Lapidus is born On this day, fashion designer Ted Lapidus was born. He was considered the creator and pioneer of the unisex fashion look and is credited with introducing a military and safari look into haute couture. He is credited as the first designer to put Military style shoulder straps on both male and female clothing, and with making blue jeans part of the mainstream of fashion design. After an apprenticeship with Dior, Lapidus started his own fashion label in 1951, and gained prominence in the 1960s when French celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot, Françoise Hardy and Alain Delon started wearing his creations. Lapidus proved influential outside France too, and was the first designer to persuade Twiggy to wear a suit and tie rather than a mini-skirt. John Lennon was another admirer and in 1969 he asked Lapidus to design a white leather bag to house a set of fourteen erotic lithographs he had made. Known as "Bag One", the limited edition of 300 bags incorporated zips, handles and a lock, as well as Lennon's signature in black, and was hand-stitched in Italy and later autographed by the Beatle. Lapidus also designed the white suit that Lennon wore on the cover of The Beatles’ Abbey Road album. In the late 1970s the Lapidus label started to produce fashion accessories as the haute couture market declined. In 1989 Ted Lapidus's son Oliver Lapidus took over the Lapidus label. In 2000 the Lapidus label ceased producing haute couture and is now primarily known for its fashion accessories of watches and fragrances. #tedlapidus #lapidus #oliverlpidus #designer #fashiondesigner #fashionbrand #couture #brigittebardot #unisex #safaristyle #militarystyle #1929 #june23 #fashion #fashiondiscovery #fashionhistory #fashioncalendar #onthisday
A #berthacollar was a demure flounce used to decorate Victorian ladies ... here, it has become almost the whole garment - abbreviated into a checked beach top or an off the shoulder frill on a striped play suit ... how deliciously irreverent. #richardavedon #harpersbazaar 1946 @avedonfoundation #theamericanlook #americanfashion #newyorkfashion #beachwear #resortwear #dresshistory #1940sfashion #fashionhistory #fashionstudies #vintagefashion

#thursdayluxe лучше поздно, чем никогда. ✍🏻 YvesSaintLaurent.
