I watched this again last night for what is probably the one millioneth time & once again it dug deep down into my core. Based on the novel written by Stephen Chbosky, the film is about 15-year-old Charlie (Logan Lerman), an endearing and naive outsider, coping with first love, the suicide of his best friend, and his own mental illness while struggling to find a group of people with whom he belongs. The introvert freshman is taken under the wings of two seniors, Sam (Emma Watson)!and Patrick (Ezra Miller), who welcome him to the real world.
So why does this film speak to me? Even at 33 I can remember that uncertain feeling about being a freshman in high school & making friends. I did drama as an extracurricular & through that the seniors in that class kind of tool is newbies under their wing. By the end of that first school year, I remember being scared because they were moving away and moving on while I was still going to be in this crazy world of high school. From that aspect, I can totally identify with Charlie and instantly connect with him. I didn't suffer from the other issues he suffered with but their is a honesty in the film through the writing & performances that connects you to it on a very real level. Not ashamed to admit that I tear up a few times whenever I watch the movie & I think it's one of the best coming oh age stories ever made and gets better and better with each viewing.
