Justice League Unlimited - Issue 2: "Poker Face"
This comic starts with Superman winning a poker game against Booster Gold, Huntress, The Flash, and Steel. Frustrated with The Man of Steel's winning streak, Booster Gold asks The Flash to run around the table to sneak a peek at Superman's hand to ensure he is not cheating, to which the Flash leaves Booster to find out on his own. They receive an alert that The Royal Flush Gang is terrorizing Las Vegas, so all 5 leave their game to end this crisis. Flash deals with Jack, Huntress hunts the Queen, Steel is mind controlled by Ace, Superman easily handles King, and Booster struggles with Ten. One thing in particular I did not like with this issue (theres more than this, let's be clear) is that Ace was portrayed to be some run of the mill mind controller, making "I'm a bad guy and you can't stop me" types of comments. She's so much of a deeper character than that, but alas, it's quite difficult to dive into any character development of ANY sort in these short issues, and if there is some, it comes across as quite contrived. Superman ends up saving Booster's butt, with Flash exclaiming to him that they let Superman win so he can be in a good mood for missions and save their butts if they need it, implying he'd leave them out to dry on their own if he lost a poker game 🤭. But I still need to remember that these issues are for children and kids love action and punches. The storyline itself should usually be taken with a grain of salt.
