POP O’ THE WEEK (wk 29) - A few months ago I was in a Ready Player Mode blood frenzy. I had read the book, the Pops were coming out, and the movie was a little over a month away. I loved the book so much that it’s probably one I’d read again. I’m not a big reader, and reading a book once is kind of a feat for me, but that should tell you how much I liked this one. From what I saw in the trailers, the movie looked different, but I said if it was fun, I’d be happy. So now that I’ve seen it and had months to reflect post-frenzy, did I like it?
Yes and no. The movie was as different from the book as I feared it would be. Some differences made sense, since certain challenges from the book wouldn’t feel nearly as exciting on screen. But some of the biggest moments from the book are left out entirely. For example: SPOILER ALERT!!! Daito survives the movie, but gets killed off in the book. That was a key moment that let you know that the danger our heroes face is real, not simply limited to losing their characters in the OASIS. So the danger isn’t real, and the movie feels somewhat hollow because of it. Watered down. Well, that’s not the only reason, but I don’t want to list each specific complaint. I will say that the movie rushes past most of the character development from the book to get to the next big action sequence, which is a shame because the character stuff is what makes the book so great.
But it is still a fun movie. Art3mis was probably the character I was happiest with, and Aech had some moments to shine as well. Like in The Shining, ironically enough. That’s another scene that wasn’t in the book, but it was fun and it made me laugh and that’s what counts. Aech probably looks the most different from how he’s described in the book, but I saw this look before I started reading, and that’s how I pictured him anyway. I prefer him this way. I usually don’t do any rear views of Pops in these spotlights, but I felt like I had to show off the back of Aech, because I dig the designs on the back of his head.
So in the end, the movie is fun enough to watch again every now and then, but the book is still where it’s at, and I still love the Pops because of the book.
legit, if they gave her a better wig and got rid of the coat in all the promo shots, she’d look perfect. it just makes the entire look seem a bit cheap when it’s all put together though.
