I was going to post something else, but the unrest in my country of birth #iran
has made me look back on the #1979revolution
. I grew up hearing nothing but why's, how's and what if's about that revolution. Different points of view, for and against. After all, my entire life has happened in the shadow of said revolt. I know there are #persians
who will read this and disagree and some #iranians
who will agree.
That revolution happened for many reasons, some of which were legitimate(people should know the facts):
Inequality of wealth distribution, cultural & economic poverty in most rural areas, lack of free political discourse, high number of political prisoners, rapid westernization of a predominantly #muslim
country, corruption in government, lack of foresight on the side of government to address the issues before it was too late, and much more.
People joined in opposition to the #pahlavi
regime. In a certain view, that movement was legitimate, yet misguided and manipulated.
That revolution did not fulfill its promises of freedom, equality and transparency. In many ways, it has expanded the gap between rich and poor and while there's political discourse, it is usually quashed with the might of the revolutionary police. And before you attack me, know that I was arrested 5 times by said force, for nothing more than wearing a t-shirt and walking where I wasn't supposed to.
That being said, I stand for truth and justice, always. That's how I was raised. I believe the people of my motherland are fed up with high prices, corruption and lack of socio-economic stability. I don't want to see other countries use that anger to further their own agendas. I don't want the plight of my sisters and brothers in Iran to become some #superpower
's tool for the expansion of their empire. I want #peace
for the land of pomegranates and #tahdig
. I want #freedom
for the birthplace of my mom, dad, grandparents and yes, me. It gave birth to me, all that I am. The love, the passion, the generosity. That is what I come from, that is what I am and that is what I share, with you.
To peace and freedom, everywhere.
