Thank you #mashagessen (left) for your intellect and clarity. #crisesofdemocracy #leonbotstein #rogerberkowitz (not the founder of Legal Seafoods)
Managed to finish this in just under 3 weeks (for me that bloody good going) Totally engrossing & a very insightful read. Highly recommend. Now I need to start something equally as inviting. #themanwithoutafaceaunlikelyriseofvladimirputin #reading #mashagessen
This book is even scarier than I thought it would be. Masha Gessen is a great writer and unbelievably brave for writing about Putin considering what he's done to others who speak out against him. An essential read that will keep you up at night. #manwithoutaface #mashagessen #putin
Day 128. Masha Gessen reviews a book by several mental health experts about Donald Trump. He might be “a hedonist /.../ a sociopath, a malignant narcissist, borderline, on the bipolar spectrum, a hypomanic, suffering from delusional disorder, or cognitively impaired.” 🤔 #mashagessen

“We are standing at the edge of the abyss. Our political system, our society, our country itself are in greater danger than at any time in the last century and a half.” – Masha Gessen Check out the full piece by @gelgud by clicking the link in our bio!
One of the most important articles that has been written since Election Day was Masha Gessen's "Autocracy: Rules for Survival" in the New York Review of Books. Gessen lived most of her life under autocratic rule in Russia, as a journalist and author—which means she's experienced firsthand what happens when writers and citizens dare to disagree with their dear ruler. On Tuesday I had the great pleasure of listening to her in conversation with David Remnick @BAM about her important new book, "The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia." Two highlights: 1) She believes Trump's obsession with Putin was best summed up by Timothy Snyder, who said "Putin is the real world version of the person Trump pretends to be on television." 2) The difference between autocratic and totalitarian rule is that the former wants you to stay home and uninvolved with politics, so they can "take care" of everything (whereas the latter insists on engagement). The current POTUS espouses the former; let's make sure we don't stay home or stay quiet, shall we?? Adaptation of an excerpt from "Immigrants Shouldn't Have to be 'Talented' to be Welcome," a @nytimes editorial by @mashagessen #newyorktimes #mashagessen #immigration #immigrationreform #daca
I wrote for @signaturereads about what #MashaGessen wrote for @nytimes about liberal mistakes when it comes to defending DACA. As the administration tries to overturn DACA and draft legislation that will kick people out of the country, liberals make the case that these people don’t deserve such treatment because they are hard-working and make a meaningful contribution to the economy. DACA itself “was designed to reward achievement: to qualify for the program, an applicant had to be in school or hold a high school diploma or equivalent, or have been honorably discharged from the armed forces.” And what about those who haven’t had those opportunities, or who didn’t want to be in the military? They are implicitly “deemed unworthy of staying in the country where they [have] lived since they were children,” Gessen points out. Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Chuck Schumer are all guilty of making a case for immigrants based on what they contribute to the economy, which leaves their humanity out of the debate completely. The logic implies that deporting people is fine, but not workers. Whether they realize it or not, liberals are making the case that you can stay only if you’ve had the opportunity to prove yourself. You can stay if you’ve gotten lucky. We don’t help those who need it, or those who help themselves. We help only those who help us. #gessen #immigrationreform #newyorktimes #immigration #daca

Masha Gessen is an award-winning Russian-American journalist and staff favorite--and we are honored to have her at BookPeople to speak and sign her book THE FUTURE IS HISTORY on October 24th. This history of the Russian regime chronicles the lives of four people caught up in the metamorphosis of the Soviet order into today’s mafia state. Floor manager Jason says "Masha Gessen owns the reality of what is going on in Russian politics and life these days. This is written proof that " those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it"..." Join us Tuesday, October 24th at 7PM to hear this incredible author speak on this increasingly topical subject, and get a signed copy of her book! #newbook #newrelease #newnonfiction #historybook #modernhistory #booksellersrecommend #mashagessen #thefutureishistory #totalitarianism #russia #journalisminrussia #speaktruth#atxevents #meettheauthor
Need some context on autocracy? Look no further than Masha Gessen's new book (I'm more than mildly obsessed with her). Her exhaustive tome is required reading both for modern politics and overall worldwide contemplation. Genius. #books #russia #mashagessen #politics #history
