about liberal mistakes when it comes to defending DACA.
As the administration tries to overturn DACA and draft legislation that will kick people out of the country, liberals make the case that these people don’t deserve such treatment because they are hard-working and make a meaningful contribution to the economy. DACA itself “was designed to reward achievement: to qualify for the program, an applicant had to be in school or hold a high school diploma or equivalent, or have been honorably discharged from the armed forces.” And what about those who haven’t had those opportunities, or who didn’t want to be in the military? They are implicitly “deemed unworthy of staying in the country where they [have] lived since they were children,” Gessen points out. Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Chuck Schumer are all guilty of making a case for immigrants based on what they contribute to the economy, which leaves their humanity out of the debate completely. The logic implies that deporting people is fine, but not workers. Whether they realize it or not, liberals are making the case that you can stay only if you’ve had the opportunity to prove yourself. You can stay if you’ve gotten lucky. We don’t help those who need it, or those who help themselves. We help only those who help us.
