What a privilege it has been to be a small part of this campaign. I have been incredibly humbled over the last few days as I knocked on doors in Mt Roskill. I feel like I have walked every street over the years and with every step memories came back to me. The kindness of this neighbourhood is visible in the smiles, the shyness, the humility and sometimes cheeky character of all its residents. Through the doorways wafted the smell of different foods from all around the planet. Children were playing every evening at dusk in parks and many little faces peeped curiously as I encouraged their parents to exercise their civic duties. Young school students asked the right questions, intrigued just as I was many years ago when I accidentally became involved in politics, because my local MP engaged with me just as Michael is with the next generation. They don't have a vote yet but they will, and watch out.
This is such a special area with so many things going for it. I want it to be the best it can be and one day I want to see less broken fences, less disengagement, less poverty, more public transport and better housing and schools.
It saddens me that right now my special home does not offer me the same opportunities I have in Melbourne. I will be back but this campaign has strengthened my resolve to return one day and keep working the good fight.
I saw a lot of hope, I see a lot of hope, a swell of support for Michael Wood, our fresh representative, who had big shoes to fill but is stepping up to the plate and more. I'm so proud to have helped build his support in my home over these fraught days, one door at a time, to get behind a person I have so much respect and admiration for. A genuine, down-to-earth, smart as hell guy who I know we will see a lot more of over the coming years. And he has an awesome family too!
It's not every day we get a chance to have our say and say no, this isn't good enough, we can do better. We have come a long way but have a huge battle ahead of us. It isn't over.
