Thermal stress is one of the primary environmental factors that firefighters experience on a regular basis. This may be created by the increased metabolic demand of the muscles during physical work, increased heat storage due to PPE and radiant ambient heat from fire or weather. Firefighters with higher aerobic capacity may tolerate thermoregulatory strain more readily than firefighters who are less fit. Therefore, training to improve aerobic fitness is important in helping firefighters to maintain thermal balance.
Shortly before taking this photo, I lost a lens to the elements and took huge impact damage to my Nikon body. It may seem quite calm and beautiful, but the reality was that winds were gusting up to 70kmph.
