The Hamburger is one of the most popular foods throughout the world. But how did it get to this world renowned status? It all started during Genghis Khan’s rule in the 13th century. His fast moving Mongol army needed food that could be carried on their mounts and eaten easily with one hand while they rode, ground meat was the perfect choice. They would use scrapings of lamb or mutton which were formed into flat patties and eaten raw. When Genghis Khan’s grandson Khubilai Khan invaded Russia they brought this ground meat with them which caught on and became “steak tartar”. Fast forward to the 1600’s German’s landing in Russian ports came across the food and named it “tartare steak” where it became popular with sailors. During the late 1800’s when European immigrants were traveling through New York Harbor, the “Hamburg Steak” brought by German immigrants became popular. It was served many different ways, mostly for breakfast. The exact origin of the modern hamburger is a myth but historians do know it was between 1885 and 1904. Many believe hamburgers were invented by a cook who placed a Hamburg steak between two slices of bread in a small town in Texas. The food became extremely popular in post WW1 America and has grown to world superstar status and an American staple since.
