- That's the Milky Way Galaxy appearing as if it's erupting out of the Mt Rainier Volcano, with the headlamps of climbers on their way to the summit. This shot was a year in the making. Last summer I began night hiking, which became an addiction, and although I didn't have a camera powerful enough to capture the beauty of the mountains under the night sky, I was still planning in my head. Once I acquired a good camera from a friend I began tracking the phases of the moon, waiting for that once a month new moon when the skies would be darkest, tracking satellite images of where light pollution would be favorable, tracking weather patterns waiting for a clear enough sky to perfectly align with the new moon, and scouting locations for the exact time and placement in the sky of the core of the milky way relative to where I would be hiking, which I had a lot of trial and error until finally I found the perfect location, and the weather and moon phase and day off from work all lined up perfectly for a galactic eruption. This was actually the first photo I took when I set up my tripod—photo by Evan Eremita.
